K-tape (Kinesiology Taping)
What Is It?
A flexible tape with built in elastic proprioceptive tracts that:
Relieves Pain
The tape can inhibit nociceptors (pain pathways) in your muscles, skin, and joint structures. This decreases painful input to the brain, which can normalize muscle tone, resulting in decreased pain and muscle spasms
Normalizes Muscle Tone as well as Supports the Muscles and Joints through Improved Proprioception
The tape stimulates mechanoreceptors in the skin, muscles, and joints; providing sensory feedback to the brain. This can improve the proprioception input of the sensory nervous system in the muscles, joints, and skin. This can lead to reduced pain and improved soft tissue tone. Depending on the direction the tape is applied, it can assist in activating the muscle or inhibiting the muscle, leading to improved muscle function or reduced muscle spasm.
Improves Circulation and Lymphatic Drainage, & Decreases Inflammation, Swelling, and Bruising
The tape gently lifts the layers of skin, creating a space between the skin, fascia, and underlying tissues. This can promote better circulation and lymphatic drainage, in turn reducing swelling and inflammation. One 2018 study concluded that kinesiotaping along with manual lymphatic draining improved congestion of lymphatic fluid after total knee replacement surgery and also improved blood circulation, relieving pain and improving functional outcomes after this type of surgery
Assists in Supporting a Growing Belly during Pregnancy to help Relieve Tension and Pain
On average, an application lasts 3-5 days and is waterproof/sweat proof
